Sumi-e is what excites me. A Japanese word for "black ink painting" on paper. It has changed how I work as an artist. Twelve years ago, I dropped my oil painting brushes for Sumi. Oil was feeling too heavy and slow.
Watching the black ink move on the paper is fascinating—motivating me to respond in the moment. There are no do-over's, I work with my entire arm and body—speed is my best friend. Painting with brush, ink and paper has cracked open my imagination.
